Not Ashamed
- We are all sons and daughters of Adam, no so? And as a
result are sinful creatures, something that we cannot change, and as a
result continue sinning on a daily basis
- For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that
do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not,
I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I
that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is,
in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but
how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that
I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do
that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in
me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with
me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another
law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me
into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
- (Romans 7:15-23)
-
- How we deal with this shows God the difference between the
men and the boys, bearing in mind the fact that He knows our every thought:
- Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know
the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband
so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the
law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth,
she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if
her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress,
though she be married to another man. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are
become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married
to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should
bring forth fruit unto God. For when we were in the flesh, the motions
of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth
fruit unto death. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead
wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not
in the oldness of the letter. What shall we say then? Is
the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for
I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. But
sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence.
For without the law sin was dead. For I was alive without the law
once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. And the commandment,
which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. For
sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and
good. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin,
that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that
sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. For we know that
the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
- (Romans 7:1-14)
-
- O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the
body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then
with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law
of sin. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are
in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For
the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the
law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak
through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh,
and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the
law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the
Spirit.
- (Romans 7:24-8:4)
-
- We've been through this a few times on this web site1,
but here is something else that may help us by giving us each a "Hup Stoot"
on the right way.
- And it's in the Old Covenant:
- And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted,
whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron's
garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest's
office.
- (Exodus 28:3)
- And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom,
and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,
- (Exodus 31:3)
- In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by
night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. And Solomon said, Thou
hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as
he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness
of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that
thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David
my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to
go out or come in. And thy servant is in the midst of thy people
which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted
for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge
thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to
judge this thy so great a people? And the speech pleased the Lord, that
Solomon had asked this thing. And God said unto him, Because thou hast
asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast
asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but
hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; Behold, I have
done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding
heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee
shall any arise like unto thee. And I have also given thee that which thou
hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any
among the kings like unto thee all thy days. And if thou wilt walk in my
ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did
walk, then I will lengthen thy days.
- (1 Kings 3:5-14)
- *A Psalm of David.* The LORD is my light
and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of
my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked, even mine enemies
and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though
an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should
rise against me, in this will I be confident. One thing
have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in
the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of
the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble he shall
hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide
me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
- (Psalms 27:1-5)
- Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my
whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation.
The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have
pleasure therein. His work is honourable and glorious: and his righteousness
endureth for ever. He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the
LORD is gracious and full of compassion. He hath given meat unto
them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant. He hath shewed
his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of
the heathen. The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all
his commandments are sure. They stand fast for ever and ever, and
are done in truth and uprightness. He sent redemption unto his people:
he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his
name. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding
have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for
ever.
- (Psalms 111:1-10)
-
- Here's the passage of Scripture that started this teaching,
and is for me as well as you:
- *A Psalm of David.* Unto thee, O LORD, do I lift
up my soul. O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine
enemies triumph over me. Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let
them be ashamed which transgress without cause. Shew me thy ways, O LORD;
teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art
the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. Remember, O LORD,
thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been
ever of old. Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions:
according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness' sake, O LORD.
Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in
the way. The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach
his way. All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such
as keep his covenant and his testimonies. For thy name's sake, O LORD,
pardon mine iniquity; for it is great. What man is he that
feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.
His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth. The
secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew
them his covenant. Mine eyes are ever toward the LORD; for he shall
pluck my feet out of the net. Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me;
for I am desolate and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged:
O bring thou me out of my distresses. Look upon mine affliction
and my pain; and forgive all my sins. Consider mine enemies; for they are
many; and they hate me with cruel hatred. O keep my soul, and deliver me:
let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee. Let integrity and uprightness
preserve me; for I wait on thee.
- (Psalms 25:1-21)
-
- For to be carnally minded is death; but to be
spiritually minded is life and peace.
